BTC/USD Annualized Volatility (30 Days)
What is Crypto Volatility?
Volatility measures how much the price of an asset fluctuates over time. In the cryptocurrency market, volatility is typically much higher than in traditional financial markets, making it both an opportunity and a risk for traders and investors.
Annualized Historical Volatility is calculated by measuring the standard deviation of daily price returns over a specific period, then annualizing it to provide a yearly perspective. This metric helps traders understand the expected range of price movements.
Why Volatility Matters
- •Risk Assessment: Higher volatility means higher potential gains but also higher potential losses.
- •Position Sizing: Adjust your position size based on volatility to manage risk effectively.
- •Strategy Selection: Different volatility levels suit different trading strategies.
Crypto vs Traditional Markets
- 📈Bitcoin typically shows 50-100% annualized volatility
- 📊S&P 500 averages around 15-20% volatility
- 💱Major forex pairs usually show 5-15% volatility

Understanding the Calculation
The annualized historical volatility is calculated using:
- Daily Returns: Calculate the logarithmic return between consecutive closing prices.
- Standard Deviation: Compute the standard deviation of these daily returns.
- Annualization: Multiply by √365 (since crypto markets trade every day) to get the annualized figure.
