Anchored VWAP Indicator: Volume-Weighted Price Tool for TradingView

Anchored VWAP is a volume-weighted price average calculated from a chosen starting point. It can describe price relative to an event-based reference, but it is not intrinsic fair value and does not identify institutional positions. This guide covers Pineify's Anchored VWAP configuration and the practical limits of that implementation.

Anchored VWAP Indicator

How Anchored VWAP Is Calculated

The general calculation divides the accumulated sum of bar price multiplied by bar volume by accumulated volume since the anchor. The selected price source matters. Pineify's current implementation uses OHLC4, the average of open, high, low and close. Other implementations may use HLC3 or another source, so identical anchors need not produce identical lines.

For a hypothetical two-bar example, source prices of 100 and 102 with volumes of 10 and 30 give an anchored average of 101.5: (100 × 10 + 102 × 30) / 40. This is a weighted average of representative bar prices, not a reconstruction of every actual transaction.

A session VWAP commonly resets each session. Other VWAP indicators support different reset periods. Anchored VWAP instead starts at a selected event or timestamp and can continue across sessions.

Add Anchored VWAP with Pineify

  1. Open Pineify's visual editor and select Anchored VWAP from the library.
  2. Set its year, month, day, hour and minute inputs. The current defaults are derived from the previous day's date, not your chosen earnings event.
  3. Configure line appearance and confirm that the anchor corresponds to an available chart bar.
  4. Generate the script and open TradingView's Pine Editor using the Pine icon on the right toolbar.
  5. Paste, save and add the script to the chart. Inspect the first plotted value and compare it with the anchor bar's OHLC4.

The library configuration marks this indicator as paid. Check current access in your account instead of assuming that every library indicator is free.

Important Anchor-Time Constraint

The current generated calculation starts when a bar's opening timestamp exactly equals the requested anchor timestamp. Its timestamp uses the symbol's exchange timezone. A time inside a bar, outside the trading session or before loaded chart history may have no matching bar and leave the line unavailable.

For example, a 09:32 anchor may not match any bar on a five-minute chart whose bars open at 09:30, 09:35 and so on. Select a real bar-open timestamp and verify the exchange timezone. If you change the chart timeframe, check the match again. This is an implementation constraint, not a general requirement of every anchored VWAP tool.

TradingView also provides a separate Anchored VWAP drawing tool where the user selects a point on the chart. Do not assume a drawing automatically becomes an accessible Pine series or shares Pineify's exact calculation.

Interpret the Line Without Overstating It

Price above the line means price is above the weighted average for the included bars. It does not prove that buyers control the market or that institutions hold profitable positions. Every trade has a buyer and seller, and OHLCV bars do not identify their cost bases.

The line can serve as a reference for a support, resistance or mean-reversion hypothesis. It does not force price to bounce. Moving far from the average can accompany a continuing trend as well as a later reversal.

Volume quality matters. Exchange-specific crypto volume is venue-specific; forex data may contain tick volume; some symbols lack usable volume. Missing or zero cumulative volume can prevent a valid result. Compare sources and sessions before comparing charts.

Choose Anchors Before Seeing the Outcome

Possible research anchors include an earnings release, a session open or a predefined gap condition. Choose a rule that could have been applied using information available at the time. For an after-hours announcement, state whether the calculation begins in extended hours or at the next regular session.

A swing low identified several bars later was not necessarily known at its displayed low. Backdating a trade entry to that low creates a timing error. Likewise, moving the anchor repeatedly until price appears to respect the line can overfit a historical chart.

Multiple anchors can compare different windows, but clusters are correlated calculations on overlapping data. They do not automatically form stronger support. Keep enough labels to identify each start time and use a recorded rule for adding or retiring a line.

Build a Testable Strategy

Specify the anchor rule, price source, bar interval, entry timing, exit, position size and costs. A proposed close-above-VWAP entry still needs a definition of “cross,” a rule for repeated entries and a decision about unfinished bars.

Then compare the original rule with any added volume or momentum filter using the same dates and costs. Reserve a period not used to select the anchor or thresholds. Include failed signals, average trade and drawdown as well as win rate. This article does not report a SPY win-rate test or an AAPL earnings trade.

For broader context, the OBV oscillator guide explains a different price/volume calculation. Agreement between two volume tools is a hypothesis to evaluate, not independent proof of institutional activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Pineify Anchored VWAP blank?

Check that the anchor matches an available bar's opening timestamp in the exchange timezone and that volume is usable. The current implementation requires an exact timestamp match.

Does the line measure intrinsic fair value?

No. It is a volume-weighted average of the selected bar-price source from the anchor. It does not value future cash flows or identify investors' cost bases.

Does timeframe affect the result?

Yes. Bar aggregation changes representative prices, volume allocation and which opening timestamps exist. Recheck the anchor and calculation after changing timeframe.

When should I reset an anchor?

Use a defined event or schedule relevant to your research question. Repeatedly choosing a new anchor after seeing the result makes historical evaluation unreliable.

Can I use several anchors?

Several reference windows can be useful if each is labelled and selected by a consistent rule. Their agreement does not by itself establish a profitable signal.
