What Is the Search Insider Trades Tool?
The Search Insider Trades tool is a free, advanced search engine for SEC Form 4 insider trading filings. Unlike basic trackers that only show the latest transactions, this tool lets you search and filter insider trades by ticker symbol, reporting CIK, company CIK, and transaction type. It provides granular details on every insider transaction including filing dates, securities transacted, price, ownership type, and direct links to the original SEC filings.
How to Search Insider Trades
- 1
Search by Ticker Symbol
Enter a stock ticker (e.g., AAPL, TSLA, MSFT) to find all insider trades for that company. This is the fastest way to see who is buying and selling shares.
- 2
Filter by Transaction Type
Narrow your results to specific transaction types like P-Purchase (open market buys), S-Sale (open market sells), M-Exempt (exempt transactions), F-InKind (tax withholding), A-Award (grants), or G-Gift (gifted shares).
- 3
Search by CIK Number
Use the Reporting CIK to track a specific insider across all their holdings, or use the Company CIK to find all insider activity for a particular company entity.
- 4
Export and Analyze
Export your search results to CSV for further analysis in Excel or Google Sheets. Use pagination to browse through large result sets.
Understanding Insider Transaction Types
P-Purchase
Open market purchase. The insider bought shares with their own money — often the strongest bullish signal.
S-Sale
Open market sale. The insider sold shares on the open market. May indicate profit-taking or reduced confidence.
M-Exempt
Transaction exempt from Section 16(b). Typically stock option exercises or other derivative conversions.
F-InKind
Payment of exercise price or tax liability by delivering or withholding securities. Common with RSU vesting.
A-Award
Grant or award of securities by the company, such as stock options, RSUs, or performance shares.
G-Gift
Gift of securities. The insider transferred shares as a gift, often for estate planning or charitable purposes.
Why Search Insider Trades?
Track Smart Money
Corporate insiders have deep knowledge of their companies. Their buying patterns can signal undervaluation, while cluster selling may warn of upcoming challenges.
Research Specific Insiders
Use CIK-based search to track a specific executive across all their board positions and holdings for a complete picture of their trading behavior.
Due Diligence
Before investing, check whether insiders are buying or selling. A cluster of insider purchases often precedes positive catalysts.
Compliance Monitoring
Monitor insider trading activity for compliance purposes. Track Form 4 filings, transaction dates, and ownership changes in real time.
