Understanding Long vs Short Positions
A long position (going long) is when you buy an asset expecting its price to increase. You profit when the price goes up and lose when it goes down. This is the most common trading approach.
A short position (going short or short selling) is when you borrow an asset, sell it at the current price, and hope to buy it back cheaper later to return to the lender. You profit when the price falls and lose when it rises.
What is ROI in Trading?
ROI (Return on Investment) measures the profitability of your trade relative to the amount invested. It is calculated as:
ROI = (Net Profit / Total Investment Cost) × 100
A positive ROI means your trade was profitable, while a negative ROI indicates a loss. ROI helps you compare the performance of different trades regardless of position size.
Break-Even Price Explained
The break-even price is the entry price at which your trade would neither make nor lose money, after accounting for all fees. Knowing your break-even price helps you set appropriate profit targets and stop-loss levels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this calculator for cryptocurrency trading?
Yes. Select "Cryptocurrency" as the asset type. Enter the buy/sell prices in USD or your base currency, quantity in coins or tokens, and any exchange fees. The calculator works for any crypto including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and more.
Does this calculator support margin or leveraged trading?
Yes, but with caveats. For leveraged positions, enter your entry price, exit price, and the number of contracts or units. The profit/loss shown will be the total P&L. To get per-unit returns, divide by your leverage ratio.
How do I calculate profit for short positions?
Select "Short (Sell)" as the position type. The calculator automatically computes profit as (Entry Price - Exit Price) × Quantity minus fees. You profit when the exit price is lower than the entry price.
Are trading fees included in the calculation?
Yes. Enter your entry fee (commission paid when opening the position) and exit fee (commission paid when closing). These are deducted from your proceeds and added to your cost basis for an accurate net profit/loss calculation.
