What is the Andrews Pitchfork?
The Andrews Pitchfork (or median line tool) is a technical analysis drawing that uses three points: two swing highs or lows (the tines) and a midpoint between them (the handle). The tool draws a midline through the handle and the midpoint of the two tines, then two parallel lines through each tine. The resulting “pitchfork” often acts as a dynamic channel for support and resistance, helping identify trend direction and potential target or reversal zones.
How to Use This Pitchfork Tool
- Place point 1 (P1)— Click the first significant high or low (left tine).
- Place point 2 (P2)— Click the handle (the pivot between the two tines).
- Place point 3 (P3)— Click the second high or low (right tine).
- The tool draws the midline and upper/lower parallel lines and extends them to the right. Use the displayed target Y levels as potential support/resistance or trend targets.
- Click Reset to clear and place a new pitchfork.
Why Use a Pitchfork Indicator?
Pitchforks help traders visualize the median trend and parallel boundaries of a move. Price often respects the midline and the upper/lower lines, so they can be used for entries, profit targets, and stop placement. This free tool lets you experiment with the geometry on a simple chart before applying it to real price data in your platform.
