What Are Forex Currency Pairs?
A forex currency pair represents the exchange rate between two currencies. The first currency listed is the base currency, and the second is the quote currency. For example, in EUR/USD, the euro is the base currency and the US dollar is the quote currency. The exchange rate tells you how much of the quote currency you need to buy one unit of the base currency. Our free Forex Currency Pairs directory provides a comprehensive list of all available FX pairs, including their ISO currency codes and full currency names, so you can quickly identify the instruments available for your trading strategy.

Types of Forex Currency Pairs
Major Pairs
The most traded currency pairs in the world, all involving the US dollar. Includes EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD, and NZD/USD. These pairs offer the tightest spreads and highest liquidity.
Minor Pairs
Cross-currency pairs that do not include the US dollar but involve other major currencies. Examples include EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, and AUD/NZD. Minor pairs offer good liquidity with slightly wider spreads than majors.
Exotic Pairs
Pairs that include one major currency and one from a developing or smaller economy. Examples include USD/TRY, EUR/ZAR, and USD/MXN. Exotic pairs typically have wider spreads and lower liquidity but can offer significant trading opportunities.
Precious Metal Pairs
Currency pairs that include precious metals like gold (XAU) and silver (XAG) quoted against major currencies. XAU/USD and XAG/USD are popular safe-haven instruments used for hedging and diversification.
Emerging Market Pairs
Pairs involving currencies from emerging market economies such as the Brazilian real (BRL), Indian rupee (INR), South African rand (ZAR), and Turkish lira (TRY). These pairs are influenced by geopolitical events and economic policy changes.
Cross Rates
Any currency pair that does not include the US dollar. Cross rates are derived from the USD exchange rates of the two currencies involved. They allow traders to directly exchange between two non-USD currencies without an intermediate conversion.
